At 11:54 I wandered out of the barracks and back out into the main hall. The door to the monitoring room was open, allowing me a view of two monitoring stations that were lit up like Christmas trees.

Lila was in there, her eyes darting back and forth as she read the readout. She spoke urgently into the phone in her hand as she described what she saw.

Looked like hauntings were definitely up. My hand insctively went for my pocket, but my phone wasn’t there. I felt cut off from my friends. What if Eleanor was trying to call me at this very moment, telling me that She had finally arrived?

All I had was this stupid track phone, something reserved only for old people and drug dealers. And Jake Rogers, apparently. The only problem with it was that I didn’t know any of my friends' numbers–something I was really coming to regret now.

I continued down the hall hugging close to the wall to stay out of the direct light of the overhead lamps. I was supposed to be meeting my contact down in the parking garage, where ideally I’d finally get a look behind the curtain at VIGIL.

The door to the underground garage came open with a squeak that reverberated around the cold concrete space. Unmarked Sentinel Cadillacs were parked all over the place, reflecting the dull white lights in their dark windows.

“Hello?” I said softly.

My voice echoed off the beams overhead, coming back to me.

No response.

For a moment I thought I’d been tricked, and the whole thing was some elaborate prank by Delton or somebody. Hell, maybe even Jones was yanking my chain.

Then footsteps scraped across the pavement behind me as a bag dropped down over my head to cut off all chance of seeing what happened next.
